Amazing Slow Cooker French Toast delivers gooey, custardy bread pudding-style French toast without standing at the stove. Cinnamon-raisin bread absorbs sweet spiced custard and slow-cooks with tender apples for an indulgent, make-ahead brunch.
Prep Time: 15 mins • Cook Time: 2 hrs • Total Time: 2 hrs 15 mins • Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 apple, cut into bite-sized pieces
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 6 Tbsp butter, thinly sliced
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (or heavy cream for a richer custard)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground allspice (adjust to taste)
- ½ cup raisins (optional)
- 1 (16 oz) loaf cinnamon-raisin bread, torn into chunks
Directions
- Grease the slow cooker insert with butter or nonstick spray. Layer apple pieces in the bottom, sprinkle with brown sugar and dot with butter slices.
- In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla and allspice until smooth; stir in raisins if using. Add the torn bread and toss gently until bread is fully saturated with egg mixture.
- Transfer the soaked bread mixture to the slow cooker, spreading evenly. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours (or Low for about 4 hours) until custard is set and the top is golden. Serve warm with maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Cook’s Note
- Substitute heavy cream for milk for a richer, more custard-like texture.
- To feed a crowd, double the recipe and use two slow cookers or bake in a 9×13-inch oven dish at 350°F for 35–40 minutes.
