Ingredients
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 2 tbsp cold butter, cut into small pieces
- Pinch fine salt
- ½ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 clove garlic, minced (or 1/2 tsp garlic powder)
- 1 cup milk (plus 1 tsp reserved for glaze)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, sift flour and salt. Rub butter into the flour with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cheese and minced garlic.
- Make a well in the center and pour in milk (reserve 1 tsp). Gently mix just until dough comes together. Don’t overwork.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured board, pat into a 1-inch thick round. Cut into 8 wedges and place on prepared tray. Brush tops with reserved milk.
- Bake 10–20 minutes until light golden. Cool briefly on a rack and serve warm.
Cook’s Note
- For an herb lift add 1 tbsp chopped chives or parsley. Use cold butter and minimal handling to keep scones tender.
