Homemade Salsa Recipe — Fresh Tomato Salsa / Pico de Gallo

Homemade salsa recipe (pico de gallo style) is a bright, fresh mix of ripe tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, and lime. It’s quick to make and a crowd favorite — serve with tortilla chips, tacos, grilled meats, or fish.

Prep Time: 10 mins • Total Time: 10 mins • Servings: 4 • Yield: about 4 cups

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped (white or red)
  • 1 tomatillo, diced (optional for brightness)
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, minced (start with 1/2 pepper, add more if you want heat)

Directions

Step 1
Gather and rinse all produce. Finely chop tomatoes, onion, tomatillo (if using), cilantro, and jalapeño.

Step 2
In a medium mixing bowl combine tomatoes, onion, tomatillo, cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice, and salt. Mix well.

Step 3
Add half of the jalapeño to the salsa, stir, and taste. If you prefer more heat, add the remaining jalapeño.

Step 4
Cover and chill for at least 15–30 minutes to let flavors marry. Serve with chips or use as a fresh topping for grilled proteins, eggs, or tacos.

Cook’s Note

For a smoother salsa, pulse ingredients a few times in a food processor. If your tomatoes are underripe, roast them briefly to deepen flavor or add a pinch of sugar to finish.

How to Store

Refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 4 days. Stir before serving. Do not freeze fresh pico de gallo — texture will be compromised.
